With its new Pro One Next service, the Stellantis Group is taking another step toward keeping its van customers on the road. “When a van is out of service due to a breakdown, no money is being made, which is why we’ve decided to give our customers the opportunity to reduce downtime with Pro One Next,” explains Eric Laforge, Global Senior Vice President of Stellantis Pro One, at the IAA Transportation trade show in Hanover, which runs through Sunday. The Pro One unit brings together the commercial vehicle operations of the multi-brand group.
With Pro One Next, the Group is moving beyond its traditional role as a “vehicle seller” and launching a new customer service system. Not only can the connected vehicles be updated “over the air,” but with this new service, the vans are monitored in real time by specialists at control centers, and if necessary, an appointment is scheduled at one of the 21,000 service locations.
Thanks to vehicle connectivity—currently, 800,000 light commercial vehicles from Stellantis brands are connected worldwide—and with the help of artificial intelligence, defects can be identified before they bring the van to a standstill. Potential causes of breakdowns are analyzed by control centers—the first of which have already been set up in the U.S. and the U.K., with more to follow—and communicated to fleet operators. In the U.K., 18,000 vans have been under this service since April. “If, for example, the tires need to be replaced, we can notify the driver or the fleet manager and schedule an appointment for the replacement. This allows for better planning of the vehicle’s use and reduces downtime,” says Laforge. Additional control centers will be set up across Europe in the coming months.
In Germany, the first such center will go live early next year. “We will then,” says Laforge, “start with selected dealers and larger fleets.” The service, which is free for fleet operators, will later be extended to all customers who use a connected van. In addition to fault alerts, Pro One Next can also offer fleet management. However, this comes at an extra cost. To comply with data protection regulations, drivers and vehicle owners must give their consent. The service is available for all of the group’s brands.
While Pro One Next is set to launch in the coming months, the “Box on Wheels” (BOW) won’t hit the roads until further down the line. BOW is a solution for the last mile in cities. The fully electric, self-driving vehicle was developed primarily for urban areas with access restrictions and environmental zones. At the IAA Transportation in Hanover, the concept vehicle is already in operation on the outdoor grounds. The vehicle was developed in collaboration with the Chinese company UQI Robotics and is also suitable for use on factory grounds or at airports.
UQI Robotics was founded in 2020 by Ubtech and Miracle Automation and has already deployed more than 7,000 robots in 66 cities and regions. In the coming years, Stellantis Pro One will adapt the autonomous van for European and international markets while simultaneously building a support network for customers.
“We believe in this concept. BOW could also be a solution to the driver shortage,” says Laforge, looking to the future. The further development of BOW is also a response to similar Chinese vehicles. “In China, there are no models like the Citroën Berlingo or the Fiat Doblò. If European regulations allow these autonomous vehicles to be brought to Europe, they will come. So we have to be prepared for that.”
BOW is already on the road in China, and according to Laforge, “150,000 of these vans will be sold there this year.” In Europe, it will still be some time before the first goods are delivered using BOW. The “Box on Wheels,” which has a top speed of 45 km/h, still needs to be adapted to European regulations.
The “Box on Wheels” is part of the group’s “Fastlane 2030” strategy and explores how autonomous logistics, artificial intelligence, electrification, and services can be integrated into the transportation system of the future. (aum)
