There you go—it can be done. Affordable electric models don’t necessarily have to come from China; Europeans, too, can bring electric cars to market in the lower price ranges. The Skoda Epiq, the brand’s most compact electric vehicle to date, will be available for order starting in October as the entry-level Essence 35 model for 25,990 euros. Together with the larger Peaq, this doubles the company’s lineup of electric models.
The Epiq is the brand's first model to use the Volkswagen Group's new MEB+ platform, which has been optimized for compact electric vehicles. While the base version is primarily intended for city use, the variants with the larger battery and fast-charging capability have a range of up to 440 kilometers, making them suitable for longer trips as well.
The Epiq is not only the first front-wheel-drive electric Skoda; the model—dubbed a “city SUV crossover” by marketing gurus—also introduces a new design language to the lineup. “The Epiq is the first production model from Skoda to fully embody the ‘Modern Solid’ design language,” says Oliver Stefani, Head of Skoda Design, describing the new form. This includes “clean lines, the black Tech Deck face at the front, and the new T-shaped light signature.”” These new design elements will also be featured in future SUV models.
The interior of the 4.17-meter-long Epiq is spacious thanks to its generous 2.60-meter wheelbase. It feels larger than its exterior dimensions suggest, and there’s plenty of room in the back for rear-seat passengers. The trunk, with a capacity of 475 liters, is family-friendly, and under the hood, the charging cable can be stored in a 25-liter front trunk. The materials are high-quality and exceptionally well-crafted. And then there’s another first: The Epiq is the first Skoda to use exclusively animal-free materials. For example, the fabric seat covers are made entirely of recycled polyester fibers, which does not compromise seating comfort. On the contrary, the seats provide excellent lateral support, are comfortable, and are suitable for long-distance driving.
Two battery sizes are available for powering the vehicle. The smaller battery, used in the base Epiq 35 model, has a capacity of 38.5 kWh and utilizes lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry. The larger nickel-manganese-cobalt battery has a capacity of 55 kWh. When it comes to powertrains, customers can choose from three performance versions: The Epiq 35 is available with an 85 kW (115 PS) motor. The Epiq 40 (starting at 27,900 euros) also uses the smaller battery, but delivers 99 kW (135 PS) and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 23 minutes. Both models deliver a maximum torque of 267 Newton-meters and have a range of up to 310 kilometers on a single charge. The top-of-the-line Epiq 55 (starting at 32,100 euros) is equipped with the more powerful battery pack, which powers a 115 kW (211 PS) motor. Maximum torque is 290 Newton-meters, and the battery runs out after up to 440 kilometers. The top speed for all variants is 160 km/h. The Epiq is designed for bidirectional charging, allowing it, for example, to power e-bikes while on the road.
The driver looks out at a clean, uncluttered dashboard, complemented by a central 13-inch screen that controls navigation and other services. Below the monitor, Skoda’s engineers have provided the driver with a row of buttons for “everyday driving tasks.” Once on the road, the Epiq proves to be a breeze to drive. Thanks to its favorable drag coefficient of 0.275, this compact Skoda is among the quietest in its class. The suspension is tuned for comfort and shields passengers from unexpected potholes or bumps. The steering is precise, and the brakes provide excellent stopping power, allowing the small Epiq to deliver dynamic performance when needed. The driver-assistance systems also ensure safety in a low-key manner. Skoda equips the Epiq with systems typically found in higher vehicle segments. These include, among others, Front Assist and Side Assist, traffic sign recognition, and lane-keeping assist. For an additional charge, sophisticated digital aids such as Travel Assist 3.0, the 360-degree surround-view camera, and the intelligent parking assistant can be ordered.
Skoda dealers offer two trim levels: Essence and Selection, with the Essence variant available for upgrade with the Comfort, Technology, and Travel packages. For those seeking an exclusive version of the Epiq, Škoda offers the “First Edition” (38,950 euros), which features special design elements. (aum)
