Chinese auto giant Chery is making inroads into Europe. Despite remarkable sales success in Poland and the United Kingdom, China’s largest exporter is still largely unknown in Germany. That is set to change in early 2027 with the official launch of its core brand in Germany. Top goal scorer Robert Lewandowski has been signed as the brand’s prominent spokesperson.
Robert Lewandowski isn’t just one of the best soccer players in the world—he’s also a family man—which is why the Chinese automaker Chery chose him as an ambassador to put the brand on the radar of potential customers in Europe. Chery? Although the group, founded in 1997, has been China’s largest auto exporter for 23 consecutive years and is represented in 130 countries, it remains a largely unknown brand—at least in Germany. So far, the Wuhu-based group has been represented on the German market by the two brands Omoda and Jaecoo, and in the first quarter of 2027, the group’s core brand will also launch in Germany.
Robert Lewandowski—the family man and star striker who has enjoyed success with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich—is set to play a role in this effort, as Chery positions itself as a “new automotive brand for families.” Although Chery will launch in Germany next year with 30 dealerships, the group has been operating a development center in Raunheim near Frankfurt since 2018, where the Chinese models are adapted for the European market. And evidently with success. In Poland and the United Kingdom, Chery achieved remarkable market shares right out of the gate and sold around 200,000 vehicles in Europe last year. In the first half of 2026, 174,000 Chery vehicles were already registered. At the same time, the group took over the former Nissan plant in Barcelona and is producing vehicles there for the European market.
Now it’s time to launch in Germany. “We know that the German market is particularly challenging, but we’re well-positioned to tackle it,” explains Eric Zheng, head of Chery Germany, in Frankfurt with evident confidence. According to plans, around 30 dealers will offer the brand’s models when the launch takes place early next year. “We plan to have a network of 100 partners by the end of next year,” says Chery Director Patrick Reimers, looking ahead. “If Chery is successful here, it will strengthen our position throughout Europe.” Even before establishing the dealer network, Chery has organized its spare parts supply. The freight forwarder Kühne and Nagel is on board as a partner. “With us, no one will have to wait for parts from the very start,” Reimers is certain. And Allianz Insurance comes into play for roadside assistance.
To kick things off, Chery is bringing its Tiggo SUV model series to customers. “In Germany, SUVs now have a market share of 33 percent,” says Reimers, explaining the focus on these vehicles. The entry-level model is the 4.3-meter-long Tiggo 4, equipped with Chery’s proprietary “Super Hybrid” system, which is designed to deliver particularly long ranges. The Tiggo 4 will be available at dealerships for 22,000 to 25,000 euros. Chery promises a range of 950 kilometers.
One size larger (4.55 meters) is the Tiggo 7 with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, for which dealers will charge between 33,000 and 36,000 euros. The system output is 279 PS, and the electric range is 90 kilometers. In total, the Tiggo 7 is expected to have a range of 1,200 kilometers. As a full hybrid (224 PS), the Tiggo 7 costs between 29,000 and 32,000 euros and has a range of 880 kilometers.
The two top-of-the-line models are available as the Tiggo 8 with plug-in hybrid technology (279 PS, combined range of 1,100 kilometers) for 38,000 to 40,000 euros, and the luxuriously equipped Tiggo 9, also a plug-in hybrid, for 49,000 euros at dealerships. The all-wheel-drive Tiggo 9 delivers 428 PS and is one of the few plug-in hybrid models that can be charged at a fast-charging station. Thanks to its 34 kWh battery, it has an electric range of 140 kilometers.
At the “Mondial de l’Automobile” in Paris, the all-electric Q model will make its European debut alongside the Tiggo series. The Q is already available in China and several export markets. The vehicle, which ranges in length from 3.19 to 4.20 meters depending on the model version and market, is expected to achieve a range of up to 400 kilometers. Additional models will follow in 2028.
