IAA Transportation 2026: Interstar, Your Turn
At the IAA Transportation in Hanover (Sept. 14–20), Nissan is highlighting its all-electric Townstar and Interstar-e models, as well as a wide range of body-on-frame and conversion options. One highlight is the Nissan Interstar with a swap body system, which was developed in collaboration with Kunath Fahrzeugbau and is available for both the Interstar-e and the diesel variant. The patent-pending system demonstrates how different transport tasks can be flexibly handled using just one base vehicle.
The system for N1-class vehicles is based on a modular base frame with twist-lock fasteners and crank supports, which can be quickly and easily fitted with various superstructures. This allows a single vehicle to be used for multiple tasks. Hydraulic lifting and tilting mechanisms are available as options. The system’s applications cover a broad spectrum, ranging from municipal and landscaping companies to the CEP sector and emergency response organizations such as fire departments and the THW. Rental car providers also benefit from the vehicle’s versatile applications.
The Nissan Interstar swap body presented at IAA Transportation 2026 has an interior length of 3,800 millimeters and an interior width of 2,140 mm. The 40-centimeter-high aluminum side and rear panels can be folded down, which facilitates loading and unloading. The vehicle on display offers a remaining payload of approximately 900 kg, including the 300-kg flatbed body.
Another vehicle on display at the Nissan booth will be the Townstar EV with an integrated collection container from the Dutch conversion specialist Veth Automotive. A yellow light bar on the roof, additional warning lights at the front of the vehicle, and the distinctive “municipal orange” paint scheme ensure high visibility even in poor weather conditions. In addition, the Nissan Townstar EV can be optionally equipped with a trailer hitch to which a grit spreader attachment for winter road maintenance can be mounted.
