At the beginning of the year, 61,341,244 motor vehicles were registered in Germany. This was 0.4 percent higher than the previous year's figure. 49,486,487 registered passenger cars also represent a slight increase of 0.3 percent.
The German brands VW (20.8 % / plus 0.3 %), Mercedes (9.6 % / +0.3 %), Opel (7.7 % / -2.6 %), BMW (7.0 % / +0.9 %), Audi (6.7 % / -0.4 %) and Ford (6.6 % / -2.4 %) were the most represented passenger car brands. Skoda was the most strongly represented import brand with a share of 5.8% and an increase of 4.5%, followed by Seat (3.5% / +5.8%) and the equally represented Hyundai (3.2% / +2.1%) and Renault (3.2% / -2.8%) as well as Toyota
(2,7 % / +0,1 %).
According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the number of registered electric cars increased by 23.2% to 2,034,260. On January 1, they accounted for 4.1% of the fleet. Almost 42.7 million passenger cars had a petrol (59.3% / -9.2%) or diesel engine (27% / -3.2%). The compact class was the strongest segment with 10,766,456 cars (-4.4%) and a share of 21.8%, followed by small cars, which increased by 2.6% to 8,819,798 cars and accounted for a share of 17.8%.
On January 1, 2026, 923,538 classic cars (motor vehicles and trailers / +4.0%) were registered, including 822,537 passenger cars (+4.1%) with and without history plates. The average age of the cars registered on the reporting date was 10.9 years. Lynk & Co. recorded the sharpest decline, with almost half as many vehicles registered. Their number fell from around 6500 to just over 3300 cars. A good 1000 Lada cars also disappeared from the German roads, but there are still almost 30,000 models of the Russian brand on the road in the country. The number of Trabant registrations increased by just over 400 to 41,862. And in addition to the now almost 74,000 new MGs from the Middle Kingdom, there are still more than 20,670 old British MG Rovers in Germany, although their number has fallen by 3.8 percent. The KBA reports the lowest number of registrations for the Chinese newcomers Omoda, Jaecoo, Deepal and Zeekr with a total of 95 registrations at the beginning of the year, while the Turkish newcomer Togg achieved 148 vehicle registrations.
The number of registered car trailers increased by 1.2% to 8,656,790 units, while the number of motorcycles remained at the previous year's level at just over five million (+0.2%). One in seven of these are owned by women (this should be noted for once in view of the upcoming International Women's Day). (aum)
