Ducati has completely revamped the Desert X, which was presented five years ago, with a new 890 cc engine and monocoque frame. The development of the second model generation also incorporated feedback from customers and rally use.
The Ducati Desert X continues to deliver 110 hp (81 kW) even with the new and lighter V2. The maximum torque also remains unchanged at 92 Newton meters, but is more even and over a wider range. The specially tuned gearbox has shorter ratios for the first four gears and a longer sixth gear. The new Ducati Quick Shift 2.0 enables more direct and precise gear changes.
The monocoque frame, unique in the segment and specially developed for the Ducati, uses the engine as a supporting element and also acts as an airbox. This reduces weight while at the same time increasing frame rigidity. The new position of the airbox also makes it easier to change the air filter. The new Desert X has rear suspension with progressive linkage and a fork with separate hydraulic adjustment options on both bars.
The new ergonomic triangle was created by moving the footrests to the rear and moving the seat and handlebars to the front. The result is a more active riding position, which improves sporty riding and off-road control. The new 18-liter polymer fuel tank is slimmer and lighter and supports movements in the saddle and has crash pads. It is also positioned very low, lowering the bike's center of gravity. The side panels are adapted to body movements and have a non-slip surface that improves grip and riding feel and makes it easier to ride standing up. The range of accessories includes an additional eight-liter rear tank.
The front mudguard is positioned higher than on the previous model. This creates more distance to the tire, so that mud and dirt can pass more easily in demanding terrain without getting stuck or blocking the front wheel. The Desert X also has a steering damper.
A new, more comprehensive 5-inch TFT color display with a resolution of 800 × 480 pixels serves as the information center. The horizontally arranged cockpit with utility bar as standard creates space in the upper fairing area for navigation devices and improves the view of the area directly in front of the motorcycle - helpful when riding off-road at a standstill. The new Desert X has a seat height of 880 millimetres, which can be reduced by four centimetres with a low seat bench and lowering kit. Two USB ports are also on board.
The six-axis sensor system detects roll, pitch and yaw movements in real time and enables precise intervention of the four-stage cornering ABS, traction and wheelie control as well as Engine Brake Control. All systems are adjustable in several stages and can be adapted to a sporty riding style, road or off-road operation and touring use. There are six predefined riding modes, which can also be adapted to individual requirements.
The Ducati Desert X will be available from April at a price of 16,735 euros and also as a 48 hp version (35 kW). The dry weight is 209 kilograms. (aum)
