Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 driving report: Anniversary model with top marks

With the Golf GTI Edition 50, Volkswagen is making a clear statement to mark the 50th anniversary of the model series. The special model not only marks half a century of GTI history, but also the high point of the sporty Golf's development for the time being.

With 325 hp, the Edition 50 is the most powerful production GTI to date and combines this performance increase with comprehensively sharpened chassis and drive technology. Externally, the Edition 50 remains clearly recognizable as a GTI, but has its own unique appearance. The red trim line in the radiator grille, the standard black roof and specific 19-inch alloy wheels in the "Queenstown" design characterize the appearance. Exclusive paint finishes such as the historic "Tornado Red" or "Dark Moss Green Metallic" underline the special status. In addition, there are numerous "GTI 50" emblems, darkened VW logos, matrix LED headlights, 3D LED tail lights with animated indicators and dark-tinted glazing.

In the interior, Volkswagen picks up on classic GTI motifs and interprets them in a contemporary way. The sports seats with the "Clark GTI 50" fabric pattern combine the traditional check design with so-called Art-Velours and red contrasting stitching. Red seat belts, aluminum pedals and Edition logos on the steering wheel and door sills create a sporty, discreet atmosphere. The ergonomics correspond to the familiar GTI standard: clear, functional and high-quality workmanship.

The Edition 50 is powered by the latest version of the 2.0-liter EA 888 turbo engine with the specific designation LK3 evo4. In this version, the four-cylinder engine delivers 325 hp and up to 420 Newton meters of torque. Power transmission is handled by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox as standard, which transfers the power to the front axle. An electronically controlled front axle differential lock supports traction and agility. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes just 5.3 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 270 km/h. This means that the Edition 50 outperforms the previous GTI Clubsport.

On board as standard is the adaptive DCC sports suspension, which has a decisive influence on the handling. In the comfort-oriented setting, the GTI is suitable for long journeys, while the sporty modes deliver a significantly firmer, more precise characteristic. Especially in the "Special" driving profile specially developed for the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, the Edition 50 impresses with its direct turn-in behavior, high stability and neutral balance. Its performance capabilities are demonstrated by a lap time of 7:46 minutes on the Nordschleife, set by development driver Benny Leuchter in a near-production vehicle - a new record for road-legal Volkswagen models.

For customers with particularly sporty ambitions, Volkswagen offers the optional GTI Performance Package Edition 50. It reduces the vehicle weight by around 25 kilograms and further sharpens the driving dynamics. The package includes lighter forged wheels, semi-slick tires, titanium tailpipes, modified pivot bearings and an additional lowering of 20 millimeters. The measures improve steering precision, traction and directional stability in particular, without fundamentally restricting everyday usability.

Acoustically, the Edition 50 remains restrained. The turbo engine is present, but does not push itself to the fore either inside or out. Even at higher speeds, the noise level remains moderate. The dynamic driving qualities result less from striking emotionality than from precision: the steering, brakes and drive work together in perfect harmony.

All in all, the Golf GTI Edition 50 is more than just a decorative anniversary model. Volkswagen is using this milestone birthday to consistently develop the classic GTI idea further. The result is a technically mature, extremely fast compact sports car that combines tradition and modernity - and convincingly continues the claim of the original even after five decades. No wonder the first allocation sold out almost immediately. But the sales department promises that the ultimate GTI will soon be back in dealerships. (aum)
