Cupra Formentor VZ5 and Leon VZ: Return of the performance icons

Cupra is sharpening its sporty profile with two strictly limited high-performance models. The returning Formentor VZ5 and the new Leon VZ mark the spearhead of the brand - technically enhanced, visually refined and characterized by clear racing DNA. Both models build on the success of their predecessors and demonstrate uncompromising Cupra performance.

The focus is on the reissue of the Formentor VZ5, which has enjoyed cult status since its first presentation. The characteristic 2.5-liter TSI five-cylinder engine continues to deliver 287 kW (390 PS) and 480 Nm and, in combination with a 7-speed DSG and 4Drive all-wheel drive, ensures precise power distribution. The newly tuned lateral force control, the electro-hydraulically controlled torque distributor and the sporty suspension with adaptive chassis control (DCC) enable particularly agile handling. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 4.2 seconds; for the first time, the top speed is no longer limited.

Visually, the Cupra has been upgraded: wider wheel arches, a contoured front bumper and a striking front splitter with VZ5 engraving emphasize the powerful appearance. Optional carbon elements on the mirror caps, front and rear sharpen the look. Four diagonally arranged tailpipes with copper-colored accents point to the racing character, while new Matrix HD headlights with light projection - Cupra logo or VZ5 signature - provide visual staging. Akebono brakes with 6-piston callipers and 375 mm discs are fitted as standard and integrated into exclusive 20-inch rims.

Inside, the VZ5 combines a racing-inspired seating position with modern digital solutions. CUPBucket seats, ambient lighting, dark aluminum and copper-colored accents define the ambience. The Sennheiser sound system with twelve loudspeakers meets a 12.9-inch infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital cockpit that displays performance data such as torque, turbo pressure and G-forces. Particularly striking is the gearshift indicator, which pulsates as the engine speed increases and lights up red at the limit. The Formentor VZ5 will be produced in Barcelona from January 2026 and is limited to 4000 units worldwide - for the first time also as a right-hand drive model for markets such as the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Prices are not yet known.

At the same time, Cupra is also sharpening its compact series: with 325 hp (239 kW) and 420 Nm, the new Leon VZ is the most powerful Leon with front-wheel drive to date. The 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, inspired by the Leon VZ TCR from motorsport, works together with a 7-speed DSG and reaches 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. The top speed is limited to 270 km/h. An electronic front axle differential lock distributes the drive power variably and stabilizes the vehicle in dynamic driving situations.

The chassis is also based on the MQB Evo architecture with MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear. DCC chassis control, progressive steering and specially tuned springs and dampers are designed to create a precise connection between driver and vehicle. Like the VZ5, the Leon VZ is also equipped with Akebono 6-piston brakes.

The exterior is acoustically and visually accentuated by four copper-colored tailpipes, while the interior focuses on discreet sporty elegance: dark chrome surfaces, improved sound insulation and the design philosophy typical of the brand characterize the ambience. The Cupra Leon VZ will be produced in an even more exclusive edition than the VZ5 of just 1500 vehicles and will also be launched in the first quarter of 2026. (aum)
