Hyundai presents futuristic off-road SUV design study at LA Autoshow

Hyundai presented the "CRATER Concept" at Automobility 2025 in Los Angeles. The futuristic off-road SUV study presents a further development of the XRT design and was developed at the Hyundai America Technical Center (HATCI) in Irvine, California. It is primarily aimed at the requirements of the US market and is intended to emphasize robustness, performance and functionality. The vehicle will be on display for the duration of the Los Angeles Auto Show until November 30.

The exterior of the Crater Concept is based on Hyundai's design philosophy "The Art of Steel", which interprets steel as a flexible, sculptural material. This idea is reflected in the exterior, which features clear contours, angular surfaces and increased ground clearance. The exterior color Dune Gold Matte is inspired by Californian landscapes. Other striking features include steep embankment angles, a continuous underride guard plate and hexagonal faceted 18-inch wheels with 33-inch off-road tires. A roof platform enables additional equipment to be fitted. Functional details such as detachable mirror cameras, which can be used as flashlights, or a tow hook with integrated bottle opener complete the off-road-oriented concept.

The interior has been designed for durability and flexible use, combining technical elements with hard-wearing materials. A black leather and Alcantara base creates a robust basic structure, while orange accents provide visual points of reference. The seats feature three-dimensional upholstery, side supports and a four-point belt system. A visibly integrated roll cage increases structural stability. The wide head-up display also serves as an interior rear-view camera mirror. The vehicle also relies on the BYOD concept (Bring Your Own Device), which enables flexible digital use independent of integrated hardware.

Differential locks, a tactile multifunction controller, an off-road mode selector switch and traction and brake management are available for off-road use. Supporting systems such as hill descent and trailer brake control as well as compass and altimeter extend the range of functions. (aum)
