The Euro-NCAP crash test organization tested a total of 23 new models in this year's largest group test. The selection ranged from electric SUVs and luxury coupés to compact crossovers and large family cars. Eighteen models achieved the top rating of five stars, while five others had to make do with four stars. One literally interesting highlight: in addition to the Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupé, two medium-sized electric SUVs from China, the Leapmotor B10 and the Hongqi EHS7, achieved the best results. All three achieved the highest score of 93 percent.
It is now the percentage values in each of the four assessment categories that determine the best of the best. Each vehicle is rated according to how well it protects adults and children in the event of an accident and how it takes other road users such as pedestrians and cyclists into account. A further category assesses the effectiveness of the vehicle's driver assistance systems. Euro-NCAP carries out a total of two frontal crash tests, a side impact test and a pole test with dummies of different sizes to assess the protective effect of the vehicle structure and the restraint systems.
In addition to the Leapmotor B10 and the Hongqi EHS7, seven other mid-size SUVs were tested, including the Kia EV5, Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Elroq and Enyaq, Subaru Solterra, Toyota bZ4X and the recently updated Tesla Model Y. Of these, the popular Tesla model impressed the most: 91 percent for adult safety and 93 percent for child protection. The Model Y also scored highly for driver assistance systems, earning a total of five stars.
The Volvo EX90 scored exceptionally well in the large SUV segment. The seven-seater electric model scored 92 percent in adult occupant protection, 93 percent in child protection and 86 percent in driver assistance systems. The Lucid Gravity and the MG MGS9 PHEV were also tested. Both scored 83 percent in adult occupant protection, but the Gravity excelled with 93 percent in child protection. All three received five stars. The BYD Seal 6 scored 92 percent for adult protection and excellent driver assistance systems.
Several models from the Volkswagen Group were also tested, including the Audi A3, VW ID.3, the Cupra Formentor and Cupra Leon as well as its counterpart, the Seat Leon. The Formentor crossover performed particularly well here, achieving the highest adult protection score of 91 percent, while the VW ID.3 stood out with a child protection score of 87 percent. It is all the more remarkable, however, that the Multivan and Caddy only scored four stars in the VW commercial vehicle category. The lower level of occupant protection and lack of safety assistants were the main reasons for the downgrading. The testers also found similar deficits in the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, Toyota Yaris Cross and Nissan Qashqai, none of which scored more than four stars.
Euro NCAP program manager Aled Williams is nevertheless satisfied: "It may sound like a cliché to say that there are no more bad cars, because of course there still are. But one thing is certain: there are more safe vehicles today than ever before." (aum)
