The belt adapts to the occupants and accident severity in real time

The world's first multi-adaptive seatbelt, which will be launched in January 2026 with the new all-electric Volvo EX60, has been named one of the best inventions of 2025 by the renowned Time magazine. This is the second year in a row that the car manufacturer has featured on Time's prestigious list of the 300 most extraordinary innovations.

With the multi-adaptive seat belt, the belt force is individually adjusted using real-time data from various vehicle sensors on the outside and inside. Characteristics such as height, weight, body shape and seating position are taken into account as well as the respective traffic situation. For example, the belt force is increased for larger occupants and a serious accident in order to reduce the risk of head injury. For smaller occupants or less serious accidents, on the other hand, the belt force is reduced to minimize the risk of rib fractures.
