The fate of the Volvo XC90 seemed to be sealed: With the all-electric EX90, the Swedes wanted to close the chapter of their successful flagship with a combustion engine. But the reality on the car market is different. Demand for electric cars is falling short of expectations, while plug-in hybrid drives are experiencing a renaissance. The XC90 is therefore coming back in a revised version - and shows that it is not yet old hat.
Visually, the luxury SUV remains true to its Scan design, only the front section with slimmer Matrix LED headlights and radiator grille with a diagonal stripe look now looks a little more dynamic. At the rear, there are darker tinted rear lights and subtle black applications. The interior continues to focus on Nordic elegance with high-quality materials such as open-pore wood and fine fabrics. More storage space in the center console and an optimized smartphone charging tray bring practical improvements. In terms of technology, the XC90 scores points with a new Android-based infotainment system that enables updates "over the air" and offers in-depth Google integration.
Volvo has thinned out the engine range: the diesel is history, leaving a mild hybrid petrol engine (B5) with 250 hp and the powerful plug-in hybrid T8 with 455 hp. The latter scores points with its impressive sprinting ability, but suffers from a limited real-world electric range and weak charging performance. The chassis is trimmed for comfort, the optional air suspension ensures a relaxed glide, while the steering is smooth rather than sporty and precise.
The XC90 is priced at premium level: at least 79,890 euros for the B5, the T8 starts at 87,490 euros. With extras, it will quickly break the 100,000 euro mark. Anyone looking for Scandinavian luxury and relaxed travel comfort will find a stylish companion in the XC90 - albeit at a proud price. (aum)
