Electric luxury with a charge inhibitor
Large, elegant, electric - the Volvo EX90 brings Nordic minimalism, impressive comfort and state-of-the-art safety technology to the road. At 5.04 meters in length, the stately electric vehicle offers fine materials and space for up to seven people. But there are also a few pitfalls lurking behind the luxurious façade: idiosyncratic operation, a rather leisurely charging performance and a price that quickly climbs to dizzying heights.
The EX90 scores highly in terms of driving comfort. The optional air suspension ensures a smooth glide, while the sound insulation turns the interior into a rolling lounge. Three engine variants are available: from 205 kW (279 hp) with front-wheel drive to the 380 kW (517 hp) all-wheel drive, which allows the SUV to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds despite its 2.8 tons of live weight. However, as is typical for Volvo, the top speed remains limited to 180 km/h. Two battery sizes with 101 kWh and 107 kWh are available.
Volvo specifies the maximum range for the larger battery as up to 614 kilometers, although a realistic figure is more likely to be 500 kilometers, depending on outside temperatures and driving style. The biggest weakness is the charging capacity: although the 400-volt architecture ideally allows 250 kW at fast-charging stations, in practice Volvo lags behind competitors with 800-volt technology. Even worse: AC charging is comparatively slow at a maximum of 11 kW, and a full charge takes around ten hours.
The price of the EX90 starts at 83,700 euros, but the top model with all-wheel drive and a larger battery can quickly reach the 120,000 euro mark with a few extras. (aum)
