From club mobile to premium alternative

Lynk & Co, a joint venture between the Chinese Geely Group and Volvo, began in 2016 with an innovative sharing mobility concept. Customers became club members who could subscribe to the Model 01, a plug-in hybrid SUV based on the Volvo XC40 platform, and share it with other members at the same time. However, the initial enthusiasm for this mobility alternative quickly waned, and leasing or sales were not particularly successful either. Now the brand is attempting a new start with the first all-electric model 02. We took it for a spin.

With its coupé-like silhouette, eye-catching LED headlights and active air flaps in the radiator grille, the crossover catches the eye. The 02 also impresses on the inside with a blend of sustainability and premium character. Vegan faux leather, recycled materials and a generous 15.4-inch HD display dominate the interior. The crossover appeals with well thought-out details such as frameless windows and a huge glass roof, but not all materials can live up to the premium claim. The center tunnel and some controls, for example, leave a literally plastic impression.

Technically, the 02 is based on the SEA platform, which is also used by Volvo and Smart. With a 200 kW electric motor, a WLTP range of up to 445 kilometers and a quick-charging function in 30 minutes, it delivers solid values. Particularly worth mentioning: the quiet cabin and low energy consumption, which could make the predicted range possible. There is some criticism of the chassis, which could be a little firmer in bends.

With an entry-level price of 35,495 euros for the basic "Core" version, Lynk & Co offers an attractive proposition. The more upmarket "More" version adds exclusive features such as a Harman Kardon sound system and 20-inch wheels. Lynk & Co also relies on a service network in cooperation with Volvo dealers - a smart move to build customer confidence. (aum)
