Electric car for the price of a combustion engine
With the Enyaq electric SUV, Skoda has proven that it understands the wishes of European customers. Now the Czechs are sending its little brother Elroq into the race. The smartly styled compact electric car could have what it takes to top the success run of its big brother - and knock Tesla off the throne of registration statistics once again. "We expect to sell it even better than the Enyaq," says Skoda boss Klaus Zellmer. No wonder: the compact SUV Stromer impresses with its sophisticated design, spaciousness and an entry-level price of 33,900 euros - hardly more expensive than its combustion counterpart, the Karoq.
The challenge was not only to shrink the car, but also the price, reveals Product Manager Björn Kröll. At the same time, the Elroq brings innovations: It introduces Skoda's new "Modern Solid" design language, in which a "tech deck face" replaces the classic radiator grille. Slim LED headlights and the brand lettering positioned at the front for the first time round off the appearance.
With a length of 4.49 meters and a wheelbase of 2.77 meters, the Elroq offers plenty of space, especially in the rear, and a trunk of up to 1580 liters. The typical "Simply Clever" details include a charging cable net under the parcel shelf - some of which is only available in the expensive package.
Under the hood is the tried-and-tested VW MEB modular drive system. Three battery sizes with net capacities of 52 to 77 kWh offer ranges of up to 580 kilometers. The Elroq is quick to charge: with up to 175 kW, the large battery fills up to 80 percent in 28 minutes.
The package is rounded off by intuitive operation, high-quality materials and clever assistance systems such as app-controlled parking. The exclusive "First Edition" version is also causing a stir - although its price of 54,610 euros is more likely to raise eyebrows.
All in all, Skoda has made a strong entry into the electric compact segment with the Elroq - Tesla is likely to tremble again. (aum)
