Many a biker's heart will beat faster: BMW is launching the R 12 as an S and homage to the legendary R 90 S, which reached 200 km/h with 67 hp in 1973. The chief designer at the time, Hans A. Muth, had designed the world's first production motorcycle with an aerodynamically designed handlebar fairing and rear apron. A number of racing successes added to the fame of the R 90 S. The eye-catching Daytona Orange paintwork is also remembered by many motorcyclists around the world.
The R 12 S incorporates many of the design features of the prototype. It has a handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with tinted windshield, a seat bench with contrasting stitching and is painted in lava orange metallic. The red "S" on the side covers, the red double finish and the brushed and clear-coated aluminum surfaces of the tank and seat hump complete the Heritage look.
The BMW rolls on wire wheels with aluminum rim rings as standard. Concessions to modernity include Hill Start Control, Shift Assistant Pro, heated grips, cruise control and cornering lights.
The S, based on the R 12 Nine T, will be available from February at a price of 22,000 euros. (aum)
