The next farewell: Toyota GR Supra

And yet another classic sports car is disappearing. Toyota is saying goodbye to the GR Supra with two special editions available to order from spring. However, the "Final Edition" definitely has it all: with 435 hp (320 kW), the last special model of the current A90 series develops almost 100 hp and 70 Newton meters (570 Nm) more torque than the previous top version. The aerodynamics and suspension have also been improved. This is joined by the new lightweight GR Supra Lightweight Evo variant with improvements to the suspension, chassis and brakes as well as optimized tuning.

With the current Supra, Toyota celebrated the comeback of the model series in 2019 after a 17-year break. The impetus was provided by the then CEO Akio Toyoda. Since the first generation of the sports coupé in 1978 as the Celica Supra, the classic configuration of front engine and rear-wheel drive as well as an in-line six-cylinder engine has been retained, even though the current model has been available with a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine as an option since 2020.

The "Final Edition" with a 3.0-liter engine and manual transmission is limited to 300 units worldwide. The more powerful engine gives the GR Supra a top speed of 270 km/h - 20 km/h more than the version with 340 hp. The damping of the KW suspension can be adjusted in 16 rebound and twelve compression stages for ideal road holding under various conditions. In addition, the cornering ability has been increased by adjusting the camber angle of the front and rear wheels and optimizing the active differential control. The electric power steering has been revised exclusively for the Performance version, resulting in more direct steering behavior. A stiffer body, a reinforced cross member in the rear luggage compartment and improved front and rear stabilizers ensure even more precise handling. The tires and brakes have been adapted to the performance.

In addition to its matt black paintwork, the Final Edition stands out with its aerodynamic revisions, which are the result of numerous wind tunnel tests by Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe. These include a carbon front spoiler, a front apron and a carbon rear wing in the style of the GR Supra GT4. These applications optimize the aerodynamic balance between front and rear, downforce and reduce drag. The carbon fiber air intake on the hood has a removable inner section, which enables additional cooling if required. A titanium silencer from Akrapovic creates an even more powerful engine sound. Red full bucket seats with Alcantara upholstery, red seat belts, exclusive carbon door sill trims and Alcantara trim underline the exclusivity of the special model in the interior.

The GR Supra Lightweight was further developed on the basis of customer feedback. Toyota Gazoo Racing has improved traction, cornering stability and braking performance as well as increasing grip. Modifications to the aerodynamics have optimized the balance between the front and rear axles as well as the downforce. The new features include a carbon fiber ducktail rear spoiler, new wheel arch flaps on the front axle and higher fenders on the front axle. The revised electric power steering provides a more direct steering feel. In the interior, the driver's seat is upholstered in Alcantara, embroidered with the Gazoo Racing logo. Striking red stitching, red accents around the gear knob and red seat belts set further sporty accents.

Despite all the farewell calls, Toyota intends to further develop the GR Supra in the future, as the press release somewhat vaguely assures. (aum)
