Nissan Silence S04: Off through the market gap
The Stellantis Group has led the way with Citroen Ami, Opel Rocks-e and Fiat Topolino, and now Nissan is also entering the market for electrically powered light vehicles. With the Silence S04 from Spanish micromobile manufacturer Acciona, for which the Japanese are responsible for sales. The electric two-seater, which is only 2.28 meters long, 1.27 meters narrow but 1.57 meters high, is aimed primarily at young people, but also senior citizens in urban environments, who are looking for individual e-mobility that is independent of public transport and weatherproof. Definitely a big gap in the market - if it weren't for the hefty prices.
The entry-level version (L6e) can be ridden from the age of 15, has a maximum speed of 45 km/h and costs 11,995 euros, while the faster L7e version can reach up to 85 km/h but costs at least 14,095 euros. Two additional removable batteries, each with 5.6 kWh, are available as an option for an extra 2650 euros each, which together provide a range of up to 175 kilometers in the best case scenario. In total, the top version costs 16,745 euros.
For the money, you get a maneuverable city car with advantages and weaknesses. The narrow design and extremely small turning circle make it easy to weave through narrow streets, while the raised seating position offers a good overview. Inside, the Silence surprises with adequate seats, vegan faux leather inserts and gadgets such as a Bluetooth audio system and smartphone holder. The 247-liter trunk is sufficient for shopping, but the vehicle remains loud without insulation and feels unstable at high speeds.
The handling of the batteries is well thought out: with a telescopic handle and wheels, they can be transported like trolleys and charged at any power socket. The battery can even serve as a mobile power source. Nevertheless, the S04 remains a compromise, as the chassis, brakes and performance quickly reach their limits. The competition from used or inexpensive electric cars such as the Dacia Spring is strong - whether Nissan's electric mobility alternative can keep up remains to be seen. (aum)
