BMW 5 becomes "German Car of the Year"

For the seventh time, a jury of 40 German and international motoring journalists has chosen the "German Car of the Year". And this time there is a real surprise: after six electric cars in a row, the BMW 5 Series is the first time that a non-technology series has been chosen as the winner.

This was underlined by Jochen Goller, BMW Board Member for Customer, Brands and Sales, at the presentation of the trophy at BMW Welt in Munich: "The selection of the new BMW 5 Series as German Car of the Year once again confirms the success of our customer-oriented product strategy. We offer the new 5 Series as all-electric models, with plug-in hybrid drive and with highly efficient combustion engines, allowing us to respond flexibly to the changing wishes of our customers."

The selection of the "German Car of the Year 2025" was preceded by extensive test drives, during which the five GCOTY class winners were put through their paces by trade journalists - in some cases on closed-off terrain. This year, the test drives were hosted by KST Motorenversuch in Bad Dürkheim.

The BMW 5 was the class winner in the Premium category (up to 70,000 euros purchase price); the other class winners were the Citroën C3 (Compact - up to 35,000 euros purchase price), the Cadillac Lyriq (Luxury - over 70,000 euros purchase price), the Audi Q6 e-Tron (New Energy - alternative drives) and the Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid (Performance). They each came out on top in their respective segments. In total, the judges evaluated 140 cars: all the major new vehicles launched on the German market since 2023/24.

The BMW did not show any weaknesses during the test drives and came out on top in several areas; the most controversial assessment was the design. In terms of environmental friendliness, the two open-technology model series - the Citroën C3 and the BMW 5 Series - came out well ahead of the electric models.

This heralds a turning point in the evaluation of the ecological footprint of cars. The jurors obviously did not carry out a tank-to-wheel assessment, as propagated by politicians, but instead took all environmental aspects into account in the sense of a cradle-to-grave approach.

German Car of the Year is one of the award programs with the greatest international reach. Participation is free of charge for car manufacturers and the award is supported by the sponsors Aitastic, Alcantara, AutoCom Associates, Bridgestone, Gentex, KST Motorenversuch and ZF Friedrichshafen. (aum)
