BYD Sealion 7: With high speed and shark nose
BYD (Build Your Dreams) is stepping up the pace. With the Sealion 7, the largest Chinese electric car manufacturer is now bringing its eighth model to Germany since 2022. The 4.83-metre-long mix of SUV and coupé has everything that not only e-mobilists love: sporty and elegant design, high-quality and spacious interior, bold performance and long ranges, now even paired with fast charging times. In addition, there is the option of all-wheel drive and a remarkable price-performance ratio, with which the buzzing sea lion is intended to stand up to Tesla's Model Y in particular.
The model designed by Wolfgang Egger, former Audi and Alfa designer, is based on BYD's "Ocean series", recognizable by the distinctive "shark nose", LED lights in the X design and the water droplet graphic in the rear lights. A 2.93 meter long wheelbase provides plenty of space, but the driving comfort remains geared more towards moderate speeds, while the all-wheel drive version delivers 530 hp and accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds with the world's fastest series-produced electric motor. Thanks to the latest blade battery technology, the Sealion 7 delivers a range of 482 kilometers even in the basic version, and with a maximum charging power of 230 kW, the large power storage unit can be filled from 10 to 80 percent in just 24 minutes at best.
The standard equipment includes many features such as a panoramic glass roof and a rotating 15.6-inch display. The Sealion 7 starts at a price of 47,990 euros, undercutting the Tesla Model Y. Despite the good price-performance ratio, BYD still lacks brand awareness in Europe. An extensive dealer network aims to change this, with 500 locations planned in Europe by the end of 2025, 120 of which will be in Germany. (aum)
