Mazda 3 and CX-30: More displacement, better torque

New entry for the Mazda 3 and CX-30: a 2.5-liter petrol engine with mild hybrid technology and 140 hp replaces the previous two-liter variants with 122 and 150 hp and promises more power and efficiency for compact classics and crossovers. Above all, the e-Skyactiv G 140 offers higher and earlier torque in everyday driving, reaching 238 Nm at 3300 rpm - 25 Nm more and 700 revs earlier than before. This is particularly noticeable in the low and medium rev ranges, i.e. exactly where many people spend most of their time driving. In the first test run, the engine demonstrated this quality particularly when gliding along at a lumbering pace and accelerating spontaneously from low revs.

On the road, the four-cylinder engine also demonstrates brisk acceleration and pleasant smooth running, which is supported by a balancer shaft. At its best, the 3 Series accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 206 km/h; the CX-30 accelerates to 9.7 seconds and 194 km/h. In addition to the mild hybrid system, which recuperates braking energy and provides up to 5.1 kW and 48 Nm of torque when starting off and in the medium speed range, the engine also works with cylinder deactivation, which is designed to optimize fuel consumption. Depending on the model and transmission - a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission is available for both models - 5.8 to 6.6 liters should be possible according to the WLTP standard. During our test drive in a CX-30 with manual transmission, it settled at around seven liters.

In addition to the new engine, there are also some updates in the interior of the two compact models - but unfortunately not in the size of the infotainment display, which is now somewhat small at 10.25 inches and is operated by a rotary pushbutton in the center tunnel rather than as a touchscreen far away on the instrument panel. What is new, however, is voice control via Amazon Alexa, which provides access to navigation, music apps, weather information and smart home connections. In addition, the navigation system now combines permanently stored maps with real-time traffic data for dynamic route guidance. The information is updated twice a minute.

Mazda offers the 3 and the CX-30 in the four regular equipment lines as well as the special Homura and Nagisa models. Prices for the Mazda 3 e-Skyactiv G 140 start at 28,140 euros, while the CX-30 starts at 28,940 euros. The new top version in the range is the luxurious "Takumi" equipment, which costs from 34,940 euros for the "three" and is available from 36,440 euros for the CX-30. Mazda always charges an extra 2000 euros for the six-speed automatic transmission. As an alternative to the G 140, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder e-Skyactiv X with 186 hp, which as a "Diesotto" with its special compression ignition combines the revving power of a petrol engine with the efficiency of a diesel engine, and optional all-wheel drive remains on offer.
