Hyundai continues to focus on all technologies - including hydrogen. CEO Jaehoon Chang emphasized this at a press conference today. And presented a study that underlines his ambitions. The Koreans have been working on the technology since 1998. In November 2000, after just six months of development, a fuel cell prototype based on the Santa Fe was presented, and in 2013 a small series based on the Hyundai ix35 was launched on the market in just under 1000 units.
The successor model, the Nexo, which is still in production, has been built in around 40,000 units since 2018. It will soon be replaced. The concept car named Initium presented today in Seoul by Hyundai boss Jaehoon Chang is a barely disguised reference to this upcoming series model, with which Hyundai intends to take the lead in the still manageable but rapidly growing market for hydrogen cars next year.
