Closing the gap: The Yamaha R9 arrives in May
There has been speculation about a Yamaha YZF-R9 for a while, but now it's here. From May next year, the supersport offshoot of the MT-09 will close the gap between the R7 and the R1. The familiar 890 cc triple remains untouched with 119 hp (88 kW) and 93 newton meters of torque at peak power, but Yamaha has adjusted the ignition timing and the mapping of the injection system as well as the final drive ratio. The winglets mounted directly below the headlights reduce lift and improve downforce.
The frame of the R9 also differs from the other models. It has a higher rigidity and is very light at 9.7 kilograms - also thanks to milled holes. The total weight of the 900 YFZ-R is 195 kilograms with a full tank. It has newly developed, fully adjustable suspension elements, whereby the rebound damping on the right fork tube and the compression damping on the left can also be adjusted separately. The quickshifter has two setting options and the five-inch TFT color display has four graphic themes. A track mode is also available, which displays information that is only relevant for racetracks, including a lap timer. Up to 40 different parameters of the R9 can be individually set via the Yamaha My Ride app. For frequent racetrack use, there is the My-Trac app, which helps to optimize your own performance. Among other things, the standard cruise control system increases comfort in everyday use.
The Yamaha R9 will go on sale in May for 13,749 euros in the brand's typical Icon Blue and Tech Black colors. A 35 kW version will also be available for 500 euros less. (aum)
