KTM is yet another motorcycle manufacturer to introduce an automated transmission. The AMT, as it is called, is currently being tested in a prototype. In addition to A mode, the system also has the option of manual shifting without a clutch.
To engage first gear, the front and rear brakes must be applied. The engine speed then increases and the machine starts moving after the brakes are released thanks to the centrifugal clutch. The gearshift diagram of the gearbox is structured somewhat differently than usual. The parking stage is located under the idle, which - just like the idle - can only be activated via the shift cube on the handlebars and prevents the motorcycle from rolling away.
For the automated gear changes, KTM promises shift times on a par with a quickshifter. In M mode, the gear steps can be changed manually as usual using the foot pedal. Alternatively, this can be done via the rocker switch on the shift cube. The AMT also offers the option of defining a personal set-up for the shift and drive modes.
The new transmission will initially be introduced in selected models. (aum)
