At the Paris Motor Show (October 14-20), Renault will be presenting the concept vehicle of a family-sized fuel cell saloon. The Emblème has a special drive concept. It obtains its energy for everyday journeys from a conventional, rechargeable battery and for longer distances from the fuel cell. Cameras instead of exterior mirrors, electric door handles that are flush with the bodywork and windscreen wipers under the hood as well as targeted airflow control, an active diffuser and a flat underbody reduce the drag coefficient to 0.25.
The electric motor has an output of 160 kW (218 hp) and draws its power from a 40 kilowatt-hour battery, which should provide a range of around 300 kilometers. The energy required for longer journeys is then supplied by a 30 kW fuel cell, which is fed from a 2.8 kilogram tank of hydrogen. Renault promises that with two stops to refuel, the Emblème can cover a distance of 1000 kilometers just as quickly as a car with a combustion engine. (aum)
