Interview Florian Huettl: "We will meet the EU's requirements"

Although 2025 will not be an easy year for the automotive industry, Opel CEO Florian Huettl remains calm: "We are fully committed to the emission targets that will come into force in 2025 and will also meet these targets," he says in an interview with Auto-Medienportal. Next year, the CO2 limits in the European Union will be significantly tightened, from the current 116 to 93.6 grams per kilometer. For every gram more that the average new car emits, the manufacturer will have to pay 95 euros - per vehicle.

Market researchers at Dataforce have calculated that this could "lead to penalties of several hundred million euros" for large OEM groups. Some companies even fear fines in the billions and are calling for the EU to soften the targets. Not so Opel: "Our task is to make electromobility exciting and affordable," says Huettl, then enough customers would also buy the zero-emission vehicles and thus reduce the CO2 average. The Stellantis brand is not only focusing on battery-electric vehicles. Opel's range of light commercial vehicles is now complemented by two electric vans with hydrogen fuel cells. (aum)
