A robot dog called "Rover"

The production and test facility for electric vehicles at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in Coventry has welcomed an unusual colleague into its ranks: a four-legged robot dog called "Rover". Its job is to autonomously monitor the complex systems and detect potential malfunctions and signs of wear at an early stage. The robot from Boston Dynamics follows a series of preset routes fully automatically and carries out up to 24 patrols every hour, day and night, seven days a week, without being distracted by anything. To do this, "Rover" uses artificial intelligence to physically open doors, climb stairs or move considerately in high-traffic areas. And like a normal guard dog, he also has his own "kennel" in the factory building, where he charges his 50-volt battery between shifts.

Thanks to the dexterity of its four legs and robotic arm, the four-legged friend can perform its tasks with ease. Added to this are the robot's advanced sensors. This enables it to detect potential gas leaks that a human ear would not pick up and use thermal sensors to determine battery temperatures in record time. By continuously taking measurements and inspecting valves and machines, the robot aims to eliminate the risk of human error.

Following the successful deployment in Coventry, JLR is now looking at future scenarios for a whole pack of robotic four-legged friends in its production facilities around the globe. (aum)
