While registration figures fell by more than a quarter in August, car production in Germany rose by almost the same proportion. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), 313,700 cars rolled off the production lines in Germany, an increase of 24 percent compared to the same month last year. This means that a good 2.7 million passenger cars have been produced in Germany since January (-2%), 14% less than in the pre-crisis year 2019.
Exports developed even more dynamically than production last month: in August, 241,200 brand-new cars were exported from production facilities in Germany (+36%). Since January, that is a good 2.1 million new vehicles, 2 percent more than in the same period last year.
However, after eight months, exports are still 10 percent below the pre-crisis level. On the other hand, according to the VDA, German manufacturers recorded a good 2 percent more incoming orders from Germany and abroad in the same period than in the previous year. (aum)
