Kia Niro PHEV: Crossover for drive flexitarians

Technological openness - what for many is now an ideological battle cry, simply means a wide range of options for the Kia Niro. The compact crossover is available as a battery-electric variant, as a plug-in hybrid and as a combustion engine with electric support. And after the hasty discontinuation of the e-car subsidy, the part-time electric car is back in demand. Which is hardly surprising, given that - when used properly - the flexible drive has the potential to reconcile everyday mobility with a green conscience.

The second-generation Kia Niro impresses with more size, presence and style. A longer and more spacious design, inspired by its big brother Sportage, combined with striking LED headlights and a wide, black C-pillar make it a real eye-catcher. The interior is dominated by two almost seamlessly connected 10.25-inch displays and an elegant control bar that cleverly switches between climate control and infotainment. However, the head-up display is only available for an extra charge.

In terms of driving, the Niro plug-in hybrid scores points as an urban glider that runs almost continuously on electric power in the city. However, the slow charging time of more than three hours is annoying. While the comfort and equipment are just right, the top version of the test car is a real headache. Even the larger Sportage SUV brother with a plug is worth considering for a few hundred euros more. (aum)
