Opel has electric for all occasions

Opel can look back on a successful first half of the year. Registrations of passenger cars grew by 15.5 percent, and the German brand in the Stellantis Group even doubled its sales of commercial vehicles. The market share grew from 4.9 percent last year to 5.7 percent. This makes the 125th anniversary of the company even more worth celebrating. And as the cherry on top of the birthday cake, the Corsa leads its segment among combustion engines and "electric cars".

Opel continues to focus on the electrification of its model range and will offer electrically powered or electrified versions in all model series by the end of the year. From next year onwards, all new models will be launched with electric drive only. Opel will also present a larger light commercial vehicle with hydrogen drive at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in October. Opel is responsible for the development of this type of drive within the Stellantis Group. In the future, the entry into the Opel electric world will begin with a vehicle that will cost around 25,000 euros.

The Rüsselsheim-based company is focusing on the hybrid drive, which combines electric drive and combustion engine drive, as a basic offering and as an introduction to electromobility. The Rüsselsheim-based company currently offers various hybrid technologies in all model series. In the city, up to 50 percent of the driving distance can be covered electrically. With 48-volt technology, "electric sailing" is also possible up to a speed of 135 km/h. At the same time, this technology saves around one liter of petrol per 100 kilometers.

Since the spring, a 48-volt hybrid drive has been added to the current Astra generation, completing the range that extends from conventional combustion engines to plug-in hybrids and all-electric drives. As with the other hybrid models, the developers combined a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol engine with an electric motor in the Astra, which here delivers 21 kW (28 hp), which translates into fuel consumption of around five liters per 100 kilometers. The price list for the Astra hybrid in the GS version starts at 36,430 euros.

For newcomers to the electrified automotive world, Opel offers the Corsa Hybrid, which is now also available with 48-volt technology. The 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo delivers 100 hp (74 kW) or 136 hp (100 kW) and is equipped with a 21 kW (28 hp) electric motor, saving the small car up to 18 percent fuel, Opel promises. Opel charges at least €26,100 for entry into the electrified world.

The Opel Mokka Electric will be launched with a larger battery (54 kWh), which is responsible for supplying energy to the 115 kW (156 hp) motor. This increases the range from the previous 338 kilometers to up to 407 kilometers. Accordingly, the Mokka is labeled "Long Range" - which somehow sounds better in English. Like the variant with the shorter range, the Mokka is one of the most pleasant representatives of its class and does not pose any problems for the person behind the wheel. Like all e-mobiles, the Mokka accelerates briskly from a standstill and ends its forward thrust at 150 km/h, electronically limited. Opel promises a fuel consumption of 15.5 kWh, which can be achieved with the right driving style. In the top Mokka Electric Ultimate trim, the compact SUV costs at least €44,270.

The new Combo Electric, which can now travel up to 345 kilometers on a single charge, is aimed at the environmentally conscious family. The latest edition of the van now also features the Vizor front end and illuminates the darkness with the glare-free Intelli-Lux LED Matrix light. In addition, the electric Combo now has a total of 18 assistance systems and, according to Opel, "best-in-class connectivity". The price list for the small van starts at 38,600 euros. When driving, the fact that the Combo was developed on a passenger car basis is pleasantly noticeable. The transport volume reaches up to 4000 liters, so that a small move or a summer vacation with the family should not be a problem. The Combo is powered by a 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor, which accelerates the 1.8-tonner to a maximum speed of 135 km/h.

Like the Combo, the Zafira is now also available at dealerships with the Vizor brand face. Developed primarily as a shuttle vehicle, the model is available in two lengths and with space for up to nine people. Opel specifies a range of up to 347 kilometers. The price list starts at 47,550 euros. A maximum 4,900 liter compartment is available for passengers' luggage, and there are 18 optional assistance systems to make transportation safe. The Opel engineers chose a 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor for the drive, which can be powered by either a 50 kWh (range up to 220 kilometers) or 75 kWh battery. (aum)
