Nissan is paving the way for autonomous driving and currently has a prototype rolling autonomously on roads not far from the company headquarters in Yokohama. The vehicle, which is based on the Leaf, is equipped with 14 cameras, ten radar sensors and six lidar sensors. Compared to previous test vehicles, the new prototype has several sensors mounted on the roof, which significantly expands the detection range and enables a more precise analysis of the surroundings - especially in complex urban traffic situations.
Nissan has been investigating business models for future mobility services since the 2017 financial year. While the current demonstration drives at SAE Level 2 are still being carried out with a driver on board, Nissan intends to offer autonomous mobility services in Japan from the 2027 financial year in cooperation with local authorities and transport companies. The goal is driverless services.
Nissan plans to begin initial field trials in the Minato Mirai area as early as the fourth quarter of the current financial year (until March 31, 2025). Demonstration drives are planned for the 2025 financial year. During testing, the level of autonomous driving functions will be gradually increased in order to assess customer acceptance. (aum)
