According to estimates by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), there will probably be fewer road fatalities in Germany in 2023 than in the previous year. Based on available data for the period from January to September 2023, the number of people killed in road traffic accidents will fall by just under 40 compared to 2022 to around 2750 (2022: 2788 fatalities). Although this would still be above the historic low of 2562 fatalities in 2021, it would be significantly below the pre-corona level of 2019, when 3046 people were killed on the roads.
The number of people injured in 2023 is expected to be around 360,000, roughly the same as in 2022. In contrast, the number of accidents recorded by the police is expected to be higher: More than 2.5 million accidents are expected on Germany's roads in 2023 for the first time since 2019, which would be around four percent more than in 2022.
