Volvo has unveiled its first van in Shanghai. The all-electric MPV is trimmed for luxury with six lounge seats and high-quality materials and features the brand's typical "Thor's Hammer" design, with the radiator grille and integrated Volvo logo illuminated for the first time. Many vehicle functions can be controlled via a voice assistant, which is visualized by an avatar on the 15.4-inch infotainment screen. The literal highlight is an additional 15.6-inch monitor mounted in the roof for passengers in the rear, on which videos can be streamed and mobile displays and a variety of third-party apps can be projected.
The EM 90 is powered by a 200 kW (272 hp) electric motor with a 116 kWh battery, which should enable ranges of up to 738 kilometers. However, this is based on the CLTC test cycle (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle), which provides for shorter driving cycles at lower speeds than the WLTP standard. Charging from ten to 80 percent at fast-charging stations should take less than 30 minutes. In addition, the EM 90 is capable of bidirectional charging, which can be used to supply other electric cars or external consumers such as e-bikes, camping fridges etc. with energy.
With the first van in its history, the Swedish Geely subsidiary says it is responding to growing customer demand for multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) - particularly on the Chinese market, where the MPV will be launched first. When and whether the electric vehicle will come to Europe has not yet been revealed, nor has the price. (aum)
